Th silverback kept his back to almost all of the time. He was always alert and in general tried to keep himself between us and his troop. The female is nursing one of the toddlers. Gorillas are much like humans in that the mother cares for her children till they are teens. At that point they frequently leave the troop and join another. Teenage males will challenge the silverback and if they can not take over the troop live as bachelors or build a new troop.
